Our verdict

The L40s Ultra is an L40s without a camera, and in some homes that is the reason to choose it. A LiDAR draws the map and a single-laser 3D structured light reads obstacles, so nothing on board takes pictures, and Dreame claims no pet recognition. The rest is a full L-series package: 19,000 Pa behind a DuoBrush certified tangle-free, a carpet boost, a side brush that extends and lifts, two spinning pads that swing out, lift 10.5 mm and detach, EasyLeap wheels for a 22 mm sill or a 40 mm double step, and four maps. The dock washes at 75 °C on a self-cleaning board with 20 nozzles, dries with hot air, refills from 4.5 litres and stores dust for 100 days. 5,200 mAh give 220 minutes of quiet vacuuming, and the warranty is three years. The laser steers round a shoe without knowing it is one. American shop only.

Pros

  • No camera on board: LiDAR mapping and a single-laser structured light for obstacles
  • The dock washes at 75 °C, dries, refills and stores dust for 100 days
  • Pads lift 10.5 mm, extend and detach; the side brush extends and lifts
  • 19,000 Pa with a tangle-free DuoBrush and a carpet boost
  • Four maps, 220 minutes a charge and a 3-year warranty

Cons

  • Structured light avoids obstacles without recognising them
  • No noise figure, charging time or robot tank size published
  • Single sills only up to 22 mm
  • Sold on the American shop only

Best for

  • Homes where a camera on a roaming robot is not welcome
  • Hard floors with a few rugs and low sills

Not recommended for

  • Pet owners who want the robot to recognise what lies on the floor
  • European buyers who want to buy from Dreame directly

In detail

Suction and brushes

The manufacturer rates the suction at 19,000 Pa. That is less than most of the 105 robot vacuums we list. The main brush is the tangle-resistant type, with one side brush. On carpet the suction rises automatically. The onboard bin holds 310 ml.

Mopping

Mop system: twin spinning pads. For carpet runs it leaves the mop at the dock. The mop swings out to reach along walls.

Navigation and obstacles

It navigates by LiDAR and avoids obstacles with structured light. It stores 4 floor plans. It climbs thresholds up to 22 mm. That is less than most of the 65 robot vacuums with a published figure. No-go zones can be drawn in the app.

The dock

The dock empties the bin, washes and dries the mop and refills the water tank. The dust bag lasts about 100 days.

Battery, charging and noise

One charge runs up to 3 h 40 min. The manufacturer publishes no noise figure.
