Our verdict

The i215 is the i2 LiDAR sized for the typical European garden. It positions by LiDAR and a camera alone, so it needs no antenna, no wire and no view of the sky, and it maps itself on the first run; against the i2 LiDAR Pro it gives up network RTK and the three-wheel drive, keeping two driven rear wheels, off-road tyres and a 45% slope rating. Ride-on edge cutting, 200+ recognised obstacles at 1 cm, twenty zones, a 3 cm step, GPS tracking, a PIN and a colour screen are all here. The 7.65 Ah battery gives 426 m² and 160 minutes a charge with 130 minutes to recharge, which is how Segway arrives at sixteen hours for 1,500 m². It weighs 14.7 kg, runs at 59 dB, is sealed to IP66 and carries a three-year warranty; cellular data is free for a year and €29.90 a year after that. For €200 more the i220 adds a 10 Ah battery, and for the same money less the i208 covers 800 m².

Pros

  • LiDAR and camera positioning: no antenna, wire or satellite view, and automatic mapping
  • 426 m² and 160 minutes a charge from a 7.65 Ah battery
  • Ride-on edge cutting, 20 zones, 200+ obstacles recognised at 1 cm
  • 59 dB and IP66 in a 14.7 kg machine
  • GPS tracking, lift and boundary alarms, PIN code, three-year warranty

Cons

  • Rear-wheel drive and 45% slopes, so not for banks and terraces
  • 220 mm deck, one disc: sixteen hours for 1,500 m² by Segway's own count
  • Weather forecast only, no rain sensor
  • Cellular data costs €29.90 a year after the first

Best for

  • Lawns of 1,000 to 1,500 m² with trees, walls or narrow passages
  • Gardens where a satellite mower loses its fix

Not recommended for

  • Steep gardens
  • Buyers who need the lawn done in a morning: 160 m² an hour is slow
